The region got its name from the Kameng river, a branch of the powerful Brahmaputra, that runs through the region. This district is a hilly territory in Arunachal Pradesh In 1919; this territory got its name changed as the ‘Balipara Frontier tract. The year 1946 saw the birth of Sela Sub-Agency that was pulled out of Balipara, and its headquarter continued to be ‘Charduar’ of Assam. In 1954, Sela Sub-Agency got its name changed to ‘Kameng Frontier Division’

West Kameng is bounded by Tibet Region towards North, to its west is Bhutan, in the north west and east lies the Tawang District and East Kameng Region of Arunachal Pradesh The Sonitpur District and Darrang region in Assam form the southern part.

The geography of the area is mostly hilly. A major portion of it cascade in the elevated hilly area, having of a collection of twisted tip and gorges. In this district there are three main hill shackles - part of Sela range, Bomdila range and Chaku range. As East Kameng, the West Kameng area has parched tundra or a cool moderate climate in the north. Snow fall occurs from mid-November to February.
