The region got its name from the Subansiri River, an arm of powerful Brahmaputra, which flows all the way through Raga Circle of. As of 1914 the region had been a fraction of Lakhimpur region of Assam. According to Government of India Notification of 1914, the region under by this quarter came to be a division of Lakhimpur Frontier Tract of the North East Frontier Tract”. As per yet another communal Notification March 1919, the Lakhimpur Frotier Tract besides Western sector had a change in name as the “Balipara Frontier Tract”.

In 1946, this area was arched out of the Balipara Frontier Tract in the name of “Subansiri Area. Yet again in 1954, Subansiri Area was renamed as the “Subansiri Frontier Division”. Ministry of Home Affairs took over the Administrative charge of NEFA from the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Subansiri Frontier Division was renamed as Subansiri District as on 1st September, 1965. Subansiri District got divided into Lower and Upper Subansiri District. The area of former Subansiri District was placed under Lower Subansiri. At last on the 22nd September, 1992, Lower Subansiri District once again got divided, to form Papumpare District.

The topography of the area is mostly hilly topography, where the Hill Ranges vary just about from 1000 to 1600 metres over sea point. A larger fraction of it cascade inside the higher mount zone having of jumbled peaks and valleys. the region has forests that are wealthy with precious varieties of trees and shrubs, cane and bamboo, and the wonderful floral resources. The region is very rich with wild animals such as tigers, panthers, leopard, cats, bear, boars, antelopes and barking deer etc.

The climatic condition of the district varies from place to place as well as season to season. Festivals that are celebrated in this region are Myoko Festival, Murung festival and Dree festival
