The district of Prakasam was originally formed on 2 February 1970. On 12th of May 1972, it was given name of Prakasam, to pay respect to the first chief minister of Andhra, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam. The freedom fighter popularly known as Andhra Kesari meaning Lion of Andhra was born in the village of Vinodarayunipalem of Prakasam district. The district is a part of Red Corridor.

The district headquarters of the district is at Ongole. The district occupies an area of seventeen thousand six hundred twenty six square kilometers.

Markapur is famous for slate manufacturing. The district has notable resources of granite reserves at Chimakurthi.

The climate of Prakasam is tropical. It is very hot during summer and winter is pleasant. South west monsoon pours down in the district.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. However, the district generates sizeable revenue from the existing and upcoming industries. The existing Tobacco factories, spinning mills, the granite factory at Martur and the new steel factory that is coming up are the major source of employment of local people. As the district is developing industrially, lots of engineering colleges are also coming up in this part.
