Day of Ashura (10th Day of Muharram) is notable day by the Muslim community. It is marked on the 10th day of the month Muharram which is the first month as per the Islamic calendar. Day of Ashura (10th Day of Muharram) is marked as a peak of the mourning of Muharram.
History
This event of Day of Ashura (10th Day of Muharram) is the day of mourning in Muharram. This day marks as the centenary of Battle of Karbala in which HussinIbn Ali the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and Shia Iman was slayed by Umayyad Caliph Yazid.
Hussein came across to the army of Ibnziyad on his way to Kufa. On 10th October 680 Husseini and his small group of companions along with his family members fought with the army of IbnZiyad which was almost 10000 people. Hussein and all his men companions were slayed while they were hungry and thirsty. The nearby stream was obstructed by Ubbayd Allah IbnZiyad. Mens from Hussiens group were not permitted to get any water from the stream.
Later the army from Umayyad burgled Hussein’s camp and took his wife and children in the law court of IbnZiyad and was kept in prison.
The episode is marked by arranging gatherings to evaluate Islamic wisdoms and to remember sacrifice of Iman Hussein. The mourning and grief’s spreads peak on its 10th day known as Ashura. The day in specific signifies the Muslim community who considered Hussein to be the fair replacement of Muhammad.
Celebrations & Rituals
Earlier mourning was expressed with cutting self by chains and knives but now the same is prohibited. Some Muslim community mourns with donation of blood. Some part of Muslim community Men’s rip themselves with chains and swords and allow their blood to gush freely.
Traditional rituals are also performed with sword. Flogging or Flagellation is also performed in which continuous beating self with hunter and is considered as self-punishment. These are some customary rituals performed Day of Ashura (10th Day of Muharram) that displays harmony to Hussein and his beloved family. Muslim community mourn to the reality that they couldn’t be the part of the battle of Karbala and save Hussein and his family.
Muslim community collects at the mosque to observe prayer to recollect the sacrifice of Hussein and his family. They also hold sessions and carry out processions and parades on Day of Ashura (10th Day of Muharram). It is a big day of mourning in Muslim community, mourners gathers at the mosque to recite sorrowful poems known as marsiya. People get nostalgic and sad with the harmony of beating drums and chats Ya Hussein.
The sheikh of the mosque narrates the story of the battle of Karbala on the Day of Ashura (10th Day of Muharram) to let the listeners release the pain and grief borne by Hussein and his family.
As per the traditions few mosque also provide free meals known as Nazri. Some people in Muslim community also donate food in the mosque and sweets to be distributed in poor and needy.
