Meerut is a wonderful city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is one of the ancient cities which have residential settlements dating way back to the time of Indus Valley Civilization. The city is just 70 km away from the national capital New Delhi. The distance of Meerut from the state capital Lucknow is 453 km. Meerut is a major city which is the second largest in the National Capital Region where the first being Delhi. Meerut is also surveyed to be the 16th largest metropolitan area and the 25th largest city in India. This city was also ranked as the 292 in 2006 and 242 in 2010 in the list of largest cities in the entire world.

It is found that the city covers an area of 172 square kilometres whereas the total area is found to be 198 square kilometres including the outskirts. The area of Meerut is third largest in Uttar Pradesh after Lucknow and Kanpur. Also Meerut is designated as the second largest army cantonment in the entire country.
