Every place that people go in India, they are sure to come across one or more than one temple, which has an importance in the society. Usually, a large number of small and big temples are found in the villages as well as cities. Each of these has varying histories and has been built in different eras. Some of these Monastries In India have become the favourite sites for tourists who come to look at the architecture of these structures.
Although every state in India has a lot of temples, those which are found in the Southern part of India are having special significance in terms of architectural style. Temples like Meenakshi Temple, Balaji Temple, Thanjavur temple, temples in Kanyakumari, etc have enchanted the tourists since ages. These are also very old temples in the country, a few of which have been included under the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. These had been built by the local kings to establish their love for architecture and reverence to deities on which they had belief. Cholas and Nayaks in the south India were highly influential in their temple building enthusiasm.
But there are also many other temples, spread out in different parts of the country, which were built during the medieval period by the regional rulers. Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, Jagannath Temple in Puri, etc were very well known for their architectural brilliance. Other temples like Somnath Temple have history which is well known to every person in the country. Golden Temple is the main shrine for the Sikh people, who worship the teachings of their gurus and this is another example of temples which are part of the social life. Millions of Sikhs from all around the world pay their respects in this temple, which is considered as the holiest place for the Sikh people.
Monastries In India were mostly built in honor of the deities which the local people or rulers believed in and many of them are in respect of Lord Shiva, different incarnations of Lord Vishnu, goddesses like Lakshmi, Parvati, Krishna, Ganesh, etc. These gods and goddesses were considered to be quite powerful in Indian mythology.
