Famous Caves In India

In India, there are many caves located that are a testament to the erstwhile times. Epitome of architectural marvels, these caves date back to thousands of years. Though, they are so old and most of them are in a dilapidated condition, these caves have not lost on their charm. Visitors from all over the world come to see them as they have become popular tourist centers. Many of the caves in India have received international recognition. Some of the main caves are-

Ajanta Caves: Located in the heart of Maharashtra, these beautiful caves have received global popularity on the tourist map. This is because of the unique wall paintings that make these caves unique and charming. Ajanta Caves are Buddhist by origin. There are thirty caves in total. Out of these 30, 24 caves are monasteries. There is a big statue og Lord Buddha in one cave and remaining five are temples. There are symbols of this ancient religion in the form of foot marks, Law wheel and many more. Tourists coming here never fail to miss gazing at the paintings of Dying Princess and Black Princess. Though light seldom reaches these caves and torch is needed to illuminate the path but once inside, it is sheer joy to watch the lovely paintings on the inner walls of these caves.

Ellora caves: These caves are other prominent caves in India. It has also been declared as a World Heritage Site. This monument is one of the most visited tourist attractions of the world. These caves are known for rock cut architecture. Believed to have been belonging to 600 AD to 1000 AD, these caves are believed to have been constructed by the Ajanta Cave builders. Here, there are 34 caves in all and only three, 12, 5 and 17 are devoted to Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism respectively. The main attraction of these caves is the gigantic Kailasha Temple in the cave 16.

Elephanta Caves- Located close to Mumbai, these caves were earlier referred to as “the place of caves” and they are sprawled in an area of 60,000 square feet. The entire complex houses seven caves. The Mahesha Murti cave is the most popular of all. Dedicated to Lord Mahesha or Shiva, there is massive image of Sadashiva in his trimurti form.

Amarnath Cave: One of the most popular place for pilgrimage among Hindus, this cave is located in the state of Kashmir.
