| Thiruvaiyaru is a city in district Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. The town is positioned on the shore of the Kaveri River which is 13 km away from Thanjavur. It has a very old temple of lord Shiva devoted to Panchanatheeswar. Although the pilgrims gather to this holy place all over the year, Thiruvaiyaru is very famous for its alliance with great person Thyagaraja, alongwithShyama Sastri and Muthuswami Dikshitarincluding the Trilogy of Carnatic melody. Name, Thiruvaiyaru means the city whichbounded by five rivers and hence the Five Rivers are Vettaaru, Arisilaaru, Kudamuruttiyaaru , Vennaaru, & Kaveriaaru.It is the control center of the district Thiruvaiyaru. It is a little, quiet& calm city. However, its humility disproves its significance as a primitive centre. You will cross five bridges ' on your way to Thanjavur, namely the Vettar, Vadavar, Kudamurutti , Vennar, and Cauvery. These are the five streams from which this town derives its title (thiru means holy; ai meansfive; aaru means waterway). The leading divinity of Lord Siva temple is situated here. It is measured as holy just like Varanasi & bathing in River kaveri here is compared with bathing in River Ganges. The Thyagaraja Aradhana is main festival held here. |
