Devakottai is a tehsil and first grade municipality of Sivaganga district in Tamilnadu, India. The tehsil is one of the oldest municipalities in Tamilnadu. The word Devikottaimeans the fort of goddess in Tamil. The name has changed to Devakottai with time. Devakottai is famous for its shaivite temple buildings, publishing, judiciary, politics and literature. The tehsil has a very good literacy rate which is above the national average rate. The tehsil played an important role in the Indian independence movement. In 1934, Mahatma Gandhi visited Devakottai to sympathize with the death of Poochi, a Dalit, in the movement against untouchability. Now a day, Devakottai has become a renowned place for movie shooting also. The town has many temples, mosques and churches. Devakottai is located between Tiruchirapally and Rameswaram NH 210. The nearest airport is at Madurai which is around 92 kms from the tehsil. The Tamilnadu Transport Corporation has buses from Karaikudi, Pudukkottai, Trichy and Coimbatore to Devakottai. Besides some private transport companies also operate bus services to and from Devakottai town.
