Gopalganj is a district under the Bihar state of India and the district comes under Saran Division. The main languages of this district are Hindi, Bhojpuri and Urdu. The area covered by this district is 2033 square kilometer and according to census 2001 the overall population of the place is 2152638 in which ratio of urban population are 130536. However, the literacy rate of Gopalganj is 48.19%. Earlier this place was known as Mubarakpur and it was a part of country Nepal till the side of Saryu River. Gopalganj was a small hamlet till the year 1875 and in the same period it was declared as a subdivision of Saran district. Gopalganj was declared as a separate district in the year 1973 and it was converted into a proper district after separation from Saran in 1976. The district is very well known for its fairs which are four in numbers and these fairs not only attract the local people but also a great number from the remaining places of the state. The names of these fairs are Holi fair, Shri Ram Navami Fair, fair during Muharram, Navaratri-Mahalaxmi fair. The place contains some famous religious places like Jalalpur Durga Mandir, Thawe Durga Mandir and Krishna Temple and a religious place for Muslims known as Jama Masjid is considered as a biggest mosque of the place with the facility of education through madrassa. Proper health facilities are present in the city as it contains seventeen hospitals as well as nineteen health centers.
