Nainital district in Kumaon division has Almora district in the north as its boundary, Udham Singh Nagar district in the south. The largest town in the district is Haldwani.

Nainital is perched on a valley at a height 1,938 meters above the sea level and contains a 2 mile circumference lake in the middle surrounded by many mountains such that Naina with height of 2,615 m (8,579 ft) in the north side, Deopatha with 2,438 m (7,999 ft) in the western boundary and Ayarpatha at 2,278 m (7,474 ft) in the south are the highest peaks, respectively. It is said that magnificent views of the plains of the south, the entangled ridges on the north and snowy ranges of the extensive Himalayan ranges can be seen from these peaks in and around Nainital.

History Of Nainital

It was after the Anglo Nepalese war from 1814-16 that Kumaon hills came under the British rule, but Nainital was official founded in 1841 only, as the first European house named pilgrim lodge was constructed by a sugar trader from Shahjahanpur by the name of P. Barron.

Climate Of Nainital

Nainital summers are temperate in nature with a maximum of 27°C (81 °F) and a minimum of 7 °C (45 °F). Major part of the tourist inflow from the central plains of northern India, occurs during this period due to which the population of the area is increased 5 times. Nainital receives snowfall during the months from December to February when the temperature varies from the highest of 15 °C (59 °F) to a lowest of −3 °C (27 °F).

Nainital In Mythology

According to some beliefs, Nainital finds mentions in ancient tales of India. Nainital lake is called as Tri-Rishi-Sarovar in the skand puranas, especially in the portion of Manas Khand where the anecdote of Atri, Pulaha and Pulastya rishis has been mentioned in which they dug a huge hole and filled the hole with the holy water of Mansarovar as they couldn't find water in the region. Of the 64 shakti peeths, Naini lake proffers as one of them. As per some beliefs, shakti peeths are places where the parts from the charred remains of sati fell as Lord Shiva was carrying them. Nainital is named so because it is believed that the eyes of Sati fell on the spot where the lake is present. Goddess Shakti has the temple of Naina devi dedicated to her which is located in the nainital lake's northern side.
