It is located 90 km from Varanasi. The main Industrial setup here is of cloth making by power loom due to presence of a large number of weavers in the district. Sari, Lungi & other clothes being prepared here nowadays and are exported to various states of India and also to various countries.

History:

MAU is considered as Turkish word, which means "GARH”, "PADAV”, "CHAVANI”. No historical records are available with respect to Mau. Mau was considered to be important township of Azamgarh. Mau district was formed on 19th Nov 1988 by the efforts of Late Kalpnath Rai.

Longitude is 84 degree east, latitude 26 degree north. Area is 1, 71,459 hectare. "Khachari" and "Khadar" are types of soil found in the areas of north of Azamgarh - Ballia Road. In some high places "Bangar" soil is also found which is not fertile.

The local language of Mau is peculiar which includes the mixture of Bhojpuri Persian, Turkish & Irani.
