West Central Railway
The West Central Railway is one of the sixteen zones of the Indian Railway and has its headquarters in Jabalpur. It was carved out of the Central Railway Zone and the Western Railway Zone. It comprises of three divisions; Jabalpur, Bhopal and Kota. This new zone was formed on July 4th, 2002 and serves parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh with 2911 total route kms. out of which 1328 kms are electrified.
West Central Railway is part of the diagonals and sides of the important Golden Quadrilateral of Indian Railways that connects the four Metropolitan Cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The Mumbai- Howrah route passes the Itarsi- Jabalpur section in the East-West direction. An important part of the diagonal from North to West on the Delhi- Mumbai route passes the Mathura- Ratlam section. On the Delhi- Chennai route which is the North-South direction, the zone has Bina-Bhopal-Itarsi section. Important freight corridors also pass through the zonal sections of Katni-Singrauli, Satna-Rewa, Bina-Guna-Kota, Kota- Chanderiya etc.
There are many areas of cultural, religious and historical interest that attract both Indian and International tourist. The National Reserve Forests of Kanha-Kisli, Bandhavgrh, Ranthambore, and Shivpur and the Bird sanctuary of Bharatpur, the hill station of Pachmarhi, the historical monuments of Khajuraho, Sanchi or Bhimbetka are all in this zone. Famous temples and places of pilgrimage for Hindus and Jains such as Maa Sharda Devi Temple at Maihar, Shri Raj Rajeshwari temple at Shridham, Mahdev Temple near Bandakpur, Jain temple at Shri Mahavirji and the Birla Temples at Bhopal and Nagda are also in this zone. The famous marble rocks of Jabalpur also attract leisure tourists
A good volume of freight and passenger traffic originates from the West Central Railway as this zone includes important stations such as Jabalpur, Bhopal, Kota, Guna, Katni, Satna, Sawai Madhopur, GangapurCity, Bharatpur, Shri Mahavirji etc. Serving the Industries of the three divisions, important commodities such as Cement, Bauxite, Limestone, Dolomite are loaded from the Jabalpur Division. LPG and POL, fertilizer, de-oiled cake and food grains from the Bhopal Division, fertilizer and food grains from the Kota Division. Large number of Mail / Express trains, Rajdhani, Shatabdi Express also trains pass through this zone bringing in an overall total annual earning of approx Rs. 2504 crores.
Workshops
The major marshaling yards, workshops and loco sheds of West Central Railway are:
- Two major marshalling yards at New Katni Jn. And Itarsi Jn.
- Three electric loco sheds at New Katni, Itarsi and Tuglakabad with a total fleet of 349 electric locomotives
- Two diesel loco sheds at New Katni and Itarsi with a total fleet of 349 diesel locomotives.
- Coach repair workshop at Bhopal
- Wagon workshop at Kota
