Kandhamal district is in the central region of Odisha. The district was formed from the erstwhile district of Boudh-Kandhamal district. The new district was formed in the year 1993. The district lies in the coordinates of 83.30° E to 84-48° E longitude and 19-34° N to 20-54° latitude. The total area of the district is 7649 sq. km.

History of the region dates back to 3rd century BC. This region was an unconquered territory called Atavika country side. The evidence of this can be found in Ashoka’s edicts.

The region was later conquered by Samudragupta in the 4th century AD. Later, Bhanjas, Gangas and the British ruled this place.

• Phulbani: Phulbani, the district headquarters is surrounded by hills. Pillasalunki river flows through the place. Hills such as Bhetkol and Brahamani Devi are a good place to view the town.
• Putudi Waterfalls: Putudi Waterfalls are famous locally. The height of the falls is 60 ft. The nearby forests enhance the beauty and the ambience of the waterfall.
• Balaskumpa: Balaskumpa is home to goddess Barala Devi. Locals believe her to be the savior of the world. The locals visit and perform special pujas during Dushhera festival.
• Belghar: Belghar is another place whose beauty is unmatched. The place is surrounded by forests and hills in a panoramic view. The place is ideally suited for picnics.
