Gajapati district is located in Orissa. It was named after Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deb who is an important member in the formation of the Orissa province. The district headquarters is located at Paralakhemundi. The District was created on 2nd October 1992. Earlier the district was part of Ganjam district. 

The area of the district is 3850 sq. kms. It lies between Latitude - 180.46’ to  190.39’ North & Longitude – 830.48’  to 840.08’ East. Most of the land in the district belongs to the forests. Sabara tribe is the chief tribe found in the district. The dance of the tribesmen during festivals and marriages is a good watch.

Rath Yatra at Parlakhemundi, Kasinagar, Jeerango, Narayanpur, Mohana, Chandragiri, R.Udayagiri, Ramagiri, Chelligoda, Mandal Sahi, Jeerango, Rayagada, Garabandha and Gurandi in the district is the most widely celebrated festival. Other chiefly celebrated festivals are Dusherra, Kumar Purnima, Thakurani Yatra, Pongal.

The average rainfall in the district is 1403 mm. the soil found in the district is alluvial, brown, land laterites, clay loam, sandy loam and red soil. clay loam, sandy loam and red soil are mostly found in the district.

The district is famous for its carvings made form Horns of animals. Brundavan Palace, Gandahati, mahendragiri, etc, are famous tourism centres.
