Lucknow is one of the major cities of India and is designated as the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is made the administrative headquarters of Lucknow District and Lucknow Division. It is a world famous city for the multi cultures practised out here. It has flourished as a cultural and artistic capital of North India in the periods of 18th and 19th centuries. Most of Lucknows population comprises of people from Central and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Also it has been surveyed that there are a considerable number of Punjabis, Bengalis and Anglo-Indians who have settled down in the mighty city of Lucknow. It has been found that around 71% of the Lucknows population are Hindus and 26% of the population are Muslims. The rest of the 3% of the population are small groups of Christians, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists.

According to the 2001 Census, the literacy rate of Lucknow is 69.39% which is quite higher than the national average of 59.5%. The literacy rate of males was found to be 76.63% whereas the literacy rate of females is 61.22%. Lucknow is one of the major markets and trading cities of Northern India. There are a number of Government Departments and public sector undertakings and the principal source of the residents of the city are salary from the jobs.
