Previously part of Munger district and sub-division, Khagaria became independent district of Bihar on May 10th 1981. Today it is administered by Khagaria town which is administrative headquarters of the district and still remains part of Munger Division.

This district and especially its big town Khagaria is known for housing the railway junction on Barauni-Guwahati Section. Equally is the town famous due to National Highway 31 crossing through it to connect to rest part of the country with northeastern estates.

The census of 2001 recorded Khagaria population at 45,126 out of which 55% constituted male while females were 45%. Average literacy rate of Khagaria, as recorded by that census, is 64% with male literacy 70% and 58% female literacy.

Khagaria houses regional office of Doordarshan which broadcast local news. The inhabitants mainly speak Angutarap dialect but Hindi and Urdu speakers are many in this district.

Several nationalized and private sectors banking firms have branches in Khagaria which cater to the banking needs of people here. Geographically Khagaria is located at 25.5N 86.48E with an average elevation of 36 meters from sea level.
