Ballia city comes under Municipal board of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at a distance of about 76 kms from Ghazipur while from Varanasi it is just 150 kms. Most of the people living here speak Bhojpuri therefore it has become their native or the local language. It is a small city with Ganges on one side and Ghaghara on the other side. Ballia is called by different names like Baghi as it has some contribution in the freedom of India. Many people associate the name of Ballia with Mangal Pandey as he was born here.

Ballia though is a small town but many well known saints have been its residents. Important people like Valmiki, Durvasa, Parashara etc are some popular names that everyone is aware of. During the ancient time Ballia belonged to Kosala kingdom therefore you can see some Buddhist culture even today. Some time back it was considered a part of Ghazipur district only but a need was felt to make it a separate and independent district. It has many small villages which together form the entire district.

There is lots of confusion when it comes to the name of this district Ballia. It is because some of them are of the view that it comes from the poet Valmiki who wrote Ramayana while some say that the names come from the type of sand which is found here. Ballua is the name of the sand and hence the name of the district. Dadri mela fair is an important event held in the months of October and November only.
