According to Kannda pronunciation, this place was originally called Tumakuru and later changed to Tumkur. National highway No 206 connects this division with other districts and states of the country. It is believed that the name of this area has been derived from the name of a flower Tumbe Huuvu and also the folk music of the area in which an instrument Tamate is used.
