There are few exclusive reasons which turn Ratlam district a place of eminence. Former princely states of Ratlam, Jaora, Sailana, Piploda are under its jurisdiction now. Total area of this district is 4,861 km² in which 1,214,536 (2001 census) inhabitants reside. Total males were 620,119 whereas females comprised of 594,417. Literate inhabitants were 677,400 out of the total population.

Ratlam district is bordered by Mandsaur district in the north and Jhalawar district of the Rajasthan state in northwest. Districts Ujjain, Dhar and Jhabua cover it from west, south and southeast respectively while its eastern border is covered through Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan. As an integral part of Ujjain Division, Ratlam district has five tehsils, so is it famous for having nine towns. The district has 1063 villages which make its rural base.

According to history Ratlam came into existence after merging of princely states Ratlam, Jaora, Sailana, Piploda and few parts of Dewas Junior, Dewas Senior and Gwalior after independence. Coming under Ratlam Lok Sabha constituency now this district had once been a big centre for business in central India from where opium, tobacco and salt were supplied. Present day Ratlam district is headquartered at the Ratlam town.
