Bellary is an eastern district in Karnataka. This place is prominently known for its historical significance. Bellary had a major role to play during the reign of Satavahanas, Kadambas, Chalukyas, Kalachuryas, Sevunas and Hoysalas, etc. Later on the British conquered the place. It became a part of the erstwhile state of Madras.

In 1953, Madras state was split on linguistic basis. Bellary was merged in the state of Karnataka. The population of Bellary according to 2011 census stands at 2,532,383 out of which male and female ratio is approximately 51% and 49% respectively. Bellary has rich natural resources which include iron ore, manganese ore, redoxide, gold, copper and lead. There also other non-metallic minerals such as andalusite, asbestos, limestone, moulding sand, quartz, etc. are also found here. Bellary is home to many steel, textiles and garments industries.

Crops such as Cotton, Jowar, Groundnut, paddy, sunflower and other cereals are produced in Bellary. Tungabhadra dam is the main water supply to the district. Other rivers apart from Tungabhadra include Hagari, Chikkahagari.
