Kangra, a part of Himachal Pradesh was formed on September 1st, 1972. Formerly it was a part of the British Province of Punjab and later it was transferred to Himachal Pradesh. The place was known as “Nagarkot” in the ancient times. Katoch Kshatriya Rajputs of Chandravenshi Lineage founded the town. The administrative headquarters of kangra district is at Dharamsala and is also the headquarters of the Tibetian government-in-exile.

Kangra distinct is located in the Western Himalayas, which is famous for its scenic beauty. Its well known for its variety of flaura and fauna. Its altitude varies from 427m to 6401m above the sea level. Since the district lies in different altitude, the climate is also different in different region. Indra block comes in sub-humid sub-tropical zone, Dehragopipur and Nurpur comes under humid sub-tropical zone, Palampur and Dharamsala comes under wet temperature zone and other parts of Kangra is hilly area.

The native language of the region is Kangri. Hindi is also spoken by most of the people in the region. Majority of the population are Hindus along with a minority community of Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists etc.

Kangra is famous for its Kangra painting, the pictorial art of the district. Jhamakada is a popular group folk dance accompanied by instruments and lyrical songs, performed only by women. The region is having people of all religions.
