Information About Madras High Court -
Madras High Court originates in British India when it was one of the three Presidency Courts founded in 1862 by a special directive from Queen Victoria. The other two Presidency Courts were the Bombay High Court and The Calcutta High Court. These Presidency Courts had the power and the recognition of the Supreme Court in their respective Presidencies.
Although the Madras State was renamed as Tamilnadu and the city Chennai, the Madras High Court has not changed its name and remains the same. Apart from Tamilnadu, the jurisdiction of the Madras High Court extends to Pondicherry.
Madras high court is one of three Courts, other than Bombay and Calcutta High Courts which were designated as Supreme Courts before Indian High Courts Act, 1861 for their respective Presidencies.
