Established as the High Court of Judicature at Fort William on 1 July 1862 under the High Courts Act, the Calcutta High Court is the oldest High Court in India. Its jurisdiction extends over the state of West Bengal and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The magnificent High Court building of Calcutta High Court is an exact replica of the Stand Haus in Ypres, Belgium, as are many renowned buildings built in the British Raj. History has it that the architectural drawings and blue prints of the Calcutta High Court Building had to be consulted when Stand Haus had to be rebuilt after it was burnt down.
