Amreli, situated in western part of India is one of among the twenty six districts of Gujarat. The district’s administrative headquarters are in the Amreli city. Amreli district covers an area of about 6760 kilometer square.

The name of the district has been derived from the name of the city. According to the ancient beliefs, in 534 AD, Amreli existed as a city named as Anumanji Later on, the name was changed to Amlik and finally to Amravati. In Sanskrit language, Amreli is known as Amarvalli.

In earlier days, Amreli was a division of the former state of Gaikwad in Baroda. Following the independence this district had become a portion of the state of Bombay and later became a district of Gujarat. The chief rivers which flow through the district are:

The district of Amreli is industrially backward. Still some of the industries like cement, electrical equipments and metallurgical are coming up in the district. Several cement corporations have set up their manufacturing services in this district due to the availability of high amount of limestone. There are even many small scale industries present here which are involved in wooden boxes, textiles and embroidery products.

The economy of the Amreli district is largely dependent on agriculture. The major crops that grow in the region are bajra, jowar, sesame, cotton and groundnut.
