Thane which is also called Thana is a city in Konkan. It is the headquarter of Thane district. It is famous because first railway line was laid from Boribandar to Thane station. Mumbai heavily depends for its water supply on the lakes in Thane. For all practical purposes thane is a suburb of Mumbai. Thane is spread in an area of 47 square kilometers and has a population of 1.2 millions. 30 lakes are located in and around Thane. They not only supply water to Mumbai but are also a great tourist attraction. The surrounding areas of Thane are also very beautiful.
