Capital of India, New Delhi serves as the centre to the Government of India and the government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Total area of the city is 42km2.

Two leading British architects namely Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker planned the city in 1911 and the same was inaugurated by British India's Governor-General Lord Irwin in 1931

The Name Delhi is derived from the King Dilu from the Mauryan Dynasty who built the city. History also states that the name was derived from the hindi word dhili which means loose because the iron pillar built by Raja Dhava had a weak foundation and was replaced. A few other historians believe the original name of NCT was Dhilika.

A city of extreme climatic conditions, New Delhi witnesses extreme summers and bitter winters. The heat waves are a common phenomenon and the temperatures are anywhere nearing 40 °C  and winters cool down to 7 °C 

New Delhi has a population of over a lakh and a half i.e. 179,112 as per the 2001 census making it the second largest metropolitan area in India after Mumbai.

History

With a population of 179, majority of the population are hindus. There are large communities like Muslims (6.3%), Sikhs (2.4%), Jains (1.1%) and Christians (0.9%) in new Delhi apart from the minorities which include Parsis, Buddhists and Jews.

Hindi is the primary language apart from the universal language of English. Since this is the capital of India, the city witnesses a huge infusion of people from all over the country especially from north and eastern parts of the country.

Being a cosmopolitan city, it has not ignored its history. Well preserved monuments and museums are an integral part of New Delhi. Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate, are a treat to the onlooker.

The transport facilities like the metro and the newly renovated Indira Gandhi International Airport are world class. Rapid construction and developmental activities in and around the capital make it a world class city.

The mix of culture and traditions has led to the increase in the tourism business for this capital as well, apart from the major national events like seminars, auto shows etc taking place in the capital.

Culture

New Delhi is a city of vast culture and considering the fact that this city has a vast and cosmopolitan population, all the major festivals are celebrated here.

Diwali, Mahavir Jayanti, Guru Nanak's Birthday, Durga Puja, Holi, Lohri, Chhath, Krishna Janmastami, Maha Shivaratri, Eid ul-Fitr, Moharram and Buddha Jayanti are the most important festivals celebrated in this region.

Republic Day, Independence day and Gandhi jayanti are national events and are celebrated with enthusiasm. The Republic day parade on 26th January is an annual event and one of a kind.

The Auto Expo, World Book Fair, Mango Festival are some of the international level events which take place in the capital city.

1951 Asian Games, 1982 Asian Games, 2010 Commonwealth Games were hosted by New Delhi and these events have promoted the city as a world class city with world class features and amenities which has increased the desire of the global population to visit this cosmopolitan city.

Food is an integral part of every citizen of the capital city. Punjabi, Mughlai are the delicacies in this region considering the historic influence of Mughals, Other cuisines which are quite common are Gujarati, Rajasthani, Maharashtrian, Bengali, Hyderabadi cuisines, and south Indian cuisine. Local delicacies like Chaat and Golgappe are very famous.
