During the British raj this city was named Chittaldurg given by the British. The town is filled with rocky hills and scenic valleys, surrounded by gigantic rocks. In Mahabharata these hills are mentioned and also stated that there was a man-eating Rakshas named Hidimba lived here. So the place is quite popular and has been attracting tourists from different parts of the world. One of the very well-liked places in Chitradurga is the Chitradurga Fort. There are eighteen prehistoric temples in the fort. Besides, one could find mosque, palace and four secret doorways in there. Another important place, an attractive tourist spot, is Chandravalli Caves.
