Karaikudi is a municipality of Sivaganga district in Tamilnadu, India. The tehsil is also known as Chettinad. Karaikudi became admired for its houses, made of limestone. It may be named as a plant called Karai, extensively spread all over the tehsil. The tehsil is also associated with chettinadu cuisine. Although nowadays the term chettinadu is usually used for non-vegetarian dishes, But actually the cuisine is mainly vegetarian. According to the 2001 census, the tehsil had a good literacy rate which is above the national average literacy rate. The town is in the metre gauge railway from Trichy to Rameswaram, Madurai, Thiruchirappalli and Ramanathapuram. It has an average elevation of 82 meters. The tehsil has many villages. Karaikudi was upgraded as Grade II municipality in 1973 and later to selection grade Municipality in 1988. The rocks found here are ancient crystalline types which is not suitable for cultivation. The weather here is hot and dry.

There are many temples and other important places to visit in this tehsil. Among them Kundrakudi Arulmighu Shanmughanathan Temple, Ariyakudi Arulmighu Thiruvengadamudaiyan Temple, Thirumayam Arulmighu Perumal Temple, Kamban Manimandapam, 1000 windows House, Chettinad Raja Palace are well-known. The town is connected with Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and Rameshwaram by railway. Tiruchirapalli and Ramanathapuram both are about 98 km away from Karaikudi by road.
