Bhagwan Bahubalai also called Lord Gomateshwara adores this small place of Venur in South Kanara District of Karnataka. It dates back to the Amarashilp Jakanchari’s days who had carved this famous 38 feet high statue in a single rock in 1604. The river Phalguni flows in this small town and this big sculpture is lying on a high placement on the western side. Further, the history adds on to state that five big statues of this Monk was found in Karnataka and are said to be of more than 20 feet height, out of which this is one. The others are Shravanbelagola, Karkala, Dharmasthala and Gommatagiri.

The famous Jain temple of Bahubali in Venur of Karnataka in South Kanara District has different interesting activities behind it. The Mahamastakabhisheka which is otherwise the head anointing ceremony of the statue was carried out in 2000 and the second Mahamastakabhisheka was done in 2012 and has attracted many tourists in the past due to its divine power.
The most famous king of the era Thimmanna Ajila who was a direct descendant of Chamundaraya, built this famous temple in 1604 AD. Chamundaraya built one such temple at Sharavanabelagola also. This temple also stands in the same way as the Sharavanabelagola stands during the rule of King Ajila for the period 1154 AD to 1786 AD. It is amazing that the 35 feet high status is standing in a single stone without any support. It is carved in such a way that one who sees it keeps seeing it continuously and wishes to visit the place again.
Other notable temples in Venur are Mahalingeshwara Temple, Ayyappa Swami Temple, Shri Rama Mandira, Akkangala Basadi or Eda Basadi, Binnani Basid or Bala Basadi, Parshwanatha Swamy Temple and a few more. Thus, this small town has attracted several tourists more so during temple festival seasons.
How to Reach Venur
This small town comes in the route of Dharmasthala-Moodabidri Karkala in the taluk of Belathangady and is around 20 kms from Moodabidri and 30 kms from Dharmasthala. There are wonderful roads, either from Mangalore or from Moodabidri or Karkala. Mangalore and Udipi happen to be the nearest Railway stations. One willing to travel through Air can board the flight from Mangalore.
