Adina Mosque

Adina mosque is the masjid situated in Maldah district of West Bengal. It is built in 14th century and is considered to be largest in Bengal ad also in India.

History

It is built by Sultan Sikandar Shah, who is the second sultan of IIyas dynasty and the masjid is considered to be the largest in India. It is situated 20 kms north from the town Malda and on the major road which leads to north Bengal. The sultan must have built this on his victory over Delhi ruler Feroz Shah Tughluk. But now it is in ruins followed by the earth quakes in 19th and 20th centuries.

Architecture

The plan of this is similar to that of mosque of Damascus which is in rectangular shape with an open central courtyard. The longer side is running towards north side and the prayer hall is to the west side of the mosque. There are pillars and domes in the mosque which has architectural value to it. Domes can be seen beyond the courtyard.

The entrance of the masjid has three arches that are open to the south west corner. Today the opening is toward east of the mosque. There are other three small entrances and a private work shop area for the kings and ladies here. The fine architecture present here has symbols that they have taken from Hindu which are present here. Most of the upper part of the mosque which consists of arches and domes is of bricks and the lower part is with the stone. The prayer hall has series of arches, mounted pillars, and heavy block capitals to it.

Significance

Once this mosque is the largest in India and has its own significance in it.  It has history and also the architectural value in it which made it to be one of the largest in India. Many Muslim come here to offer their prayers and also tourists are attracted towards it by its history, culture and also architectural value.

Climate

Climate in west Bengal varies from one place to other. The main seasons here are summer, winter and autumn. In delta region summer has excessive humidity while the western islands experience dry summer. Monsoons bring rain to the whole state from June to September. Winter is mild and has average temperature with some of the regions experiencing snow fall in winter.

How to Reach There

There well connected roads, trains and also flights to west Bengal.

Air

It has many airports and you can reach there and from there you can come to Maldah district by road or rail. From Maldah district it is easy to come to Adina mosque.

Rail

Kolkata is head of two divisions in Indian railways one is eastern railway and other is south eastern railway. Kolkata metro is India’s first underground railway. There are many rails that are connected to Kolkata and from there you can take a train or you can by road to Adina mosque.

Road

The roads to west Bengal are well connected from all the major cities in India. Roads are wide and are connected well to this place. From some of the place there is direct connectivity to Maldah district from which you can come easily to Adina mosque.
