Unnao, a district in Uttar Pradesh is named after its headquarters. It is believed that the forest that covered up the place was cleared by Chauhan Rajput. Subsequently, Unwant Singh built a fort at this place and named the city after his name as Unnao.

The district forms a part of Oudh. Unnao lies in the Gangetic plain and the alluvial soil makes the lands extremely fertile. The district is estranged from Kanpur district by the River Ganga. Unnao is famous for its leather goods and tanning is its major industry.

The place covers an area of about 4558 kilometer square. The most notable city in the district of Unnao is Shuklaganj which is closely linked to Kanpur.
