Raebareli is a district located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district was set up in 1858 by the British and was named after the headquarter city. However, people belief that the town was established by the Bhars and came to be known as Barauli. With the passage of time the name got altered into Bareli. The adjunct Rae is believed to be altered from the name of a village called Rahi adjacent to the city.

The district Raebareli covers an area of about 4, 609 kilometer square. The people in this district earn their living mainly by agriculture and allied activities like animal husbandry. However, a handsome amount of people are engaged in small scale industries also. Raebarelli is famous in Indian History as it was the constituency of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
