Mirzapur district, situated in the Northern part of India, is one amongst the seventy districts of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Mirzapur town is the district headquarters. Mirzapur is famous for Vindhyavadsini Temple, located in the hills of Vindhyachal.

According to Hindu tradition, the district was earlier named as Girzapur. This name was taken from “Girija”, a nickname of goddess Parvati. Hindus believe that Goddess during a vajna forfeited herself in this place. The present name Mirzapur has been taken from two different words, “Mir” which signifies sea and “ja” which signifies outcome while “pur” denotes town.

The district of Mirzapur has a total area of 4,521 kilometer square. Other than agriculture, manufacturing of carpet is another major livelihood of the people.
