Maharajganj district is one amongst the seventy-one districts of the state Uttar Pradesh. On second October 1989, the district came into existence. The district is located in the border of India and Nepal.

The total area of Maharajganj is about two thousand nine hundred and thirty four square kilometers. The forest covers about twelve percent of the total area.

The district of Maharajganj comprises mainly of Pherada, Nichlaul, Nautanwa, and Maharajganj Sadar Nautanwa. There are four development blocks of Maharajganj Sadar tehsil which are Partawal, Paniara, Ghughali and Maharajganj. Two development blocks of community is present in the Nautanwa tehsil which are Laxmipur and Ratanpur. Three development blocks are present in the Nichlaul tehsil which are Siswa, Mithaura and Nichlaul. Three development blocks of the community is also present in the Pherada tehsil which are Pheranda, Dhani and Bridgmangabj. The district has a total number of one thousand two hundred and fifty eight villages in all.
