Kanpur Nagar is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It forms a portion of Kanpur Division and the headquarters of the district is located in Kanpur.

As the population of the region had increased immensely, in the year 1977, the district of Kanpur was divided into two districts namely Kanpur Dehat and Kanpur Nagar. It was done to have an effective control over the affairs of the district and mainly for better administration purpose. The two districts were reunited in 1979, but eventually got separated again in 1981.

It covered an area of three thousand and twenty nine square kilometers. The NH2 is one of the major highways passing through the district. The districts have three Lok Sabha Constituencies located at

Kanpur Nagar has lot of historical importance. In Jajmau portions of ancient monuments and structure of the King Yayati are still present. In Phool Baugh there is a museum.
