The district of Kannauj located in the northern portion of India in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district stretches along the river Ganges. The administrative center is located in the northwest portion of Kanpur.

The area of the district is one thousand nine hundred and ninety three square kilometers. The Lok Sabha constituency of the district is in Kannauj.

On eighteenth September 1997, Kannauj was separated from Farrukhabad district. The city of Kannauj derived its name from old name of Kanyakubja, found in the Puranas, Mahabharata and the Ramayana. The history of the district dates back from remote ancient times. It has a very rich cultural and archaeological heritage. Number of tools and weapons of the Bronze Age along with several stone statues were found in this district.
