Azamgarh is the fourth most populous city in Uttar Pradesh. It is the headquarters of Azamgarh division.

History:

The district is named after its headquarters town, Azamgarh, which was founded in 1665 by Azam, son of Vikramajit. It was one of the easternmost districts of the State and was once part of Kosala Kingdom. The largest of the forts in the district of Azamgarh is that of Ghosi which was built by Raja Ghosh. In1665 AD Azamgarh the headquarters of this district derives its name for Azam Khan who founded it on the ruins of the village Ailwal and Phulwaria. On September 18, 1832 Azamgarh district was formed. Azamgarh was integral part of the Quit India Movement which was started on August 9, 1942.

Geography:

It is situated at height 64 meters above the sea level. It has the area of 4054 square km. The soil is fertile, and very highly cultivated, bearing magnificent crops of rice, sugar-cane, wheat and orchards of mango and guava.

Culture:

• Azamgarh is rich in cultural and religious activities since Azamgarh lies in the eastern part of the Uttar Pradesh. The tradition language is particularly Bhojpuri or Purvi. 
• Famous folk songs are: Kajri, Barahmasi, Chaumas, Phafua, Kahrava, Birha, Alha, Kirtan, etc.
• Famous folk dances are: Ramlila, Kirtan dance, Ahirwa dance, etc.
