History behind the state name :

The name Tripura owes its origin to the famous Goddess Tripureshwari temple at Udaipur. Tri in Sanskrit means Three, Pur means region and Eshwari means goddess. The Goddess of the three Worlds or the wife of Shiva is the meaning of Tripureshwari.

The other meaning is that in Kokborok language Twi means water and Pra near, as the ancient Tripura kingdom was spread upto the waters of Bay of Bengal the place may have got this name.Tripura Sundari the presiding deity of the land may be the reason for its name.

Population:

The total population of Tripura is slightly over 36.7 lakhs which amounts to 0.3% of India’s total population. The density of the population is 350 people per square kilometre which is the second highest in North-East India. The people of Tripura are mostly Bengalis while the native population comprises of Kokborok speaking tribes of the Tripuri region the Jamatia, the Reang and the Noatia tribal communities.

Geographical situation:

Tripura is a landlocked state at the north-eastern part of India with Assam and Mizoram forming its eastern border. The neighbouring country of Bangladesh surrounds the state to its North, West and South. It is a hilly state with lowest altitude of 15 metres and the highest of 940 metres above sea level.

Weather conditions:

The climatic condition of the state is referred to as tropical climate with distinct monsoon season. The state has a low 10 degree Celsius temperature in winter and in summer it ranges up to 35 degree Celsius. The longest season of the state is the monsoon season which lasts from May to September.

History of the State:

Very long back the region was known as Kirat Desh. The mention of this region is found in the Puranas and the Mahabharata of the Hindus. The pillar inscriptions of Emperor Asoka also bear the name of this region.
Primarily Tripura was a princely state which was ruled by the Tripuri kings for three thousand years until it got merged with the Indian Republic.

The Ganamukti Parishad movement of Tripura resulted its monarchy to end and it had to join the Indian union on September 9, 1947. At first it was made into a Union Territory and then on 21st January 1972 Tripura attained statehood.

Demographics:

The refugee Bengalis are the greatest in number in Tripura forming about 70% of the population. The sex ratio of the state is 961 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate of Tripura is 87.75% which is a lot higher than the national average.

Economical Information:

The economy of the state is mainly based on the agriculture and agricultural products which provides employment to almost 65% of the total population. Food crops like rice, potato and oilseeds are the major crops of the region while cash crops like rubber and tea are also grown. Tripura is the second largest producer of rubber after Kerala.

Timber and handicrafts make up a considerable amount of trade for this region. Tripura has good quantity of natural gas storage which makes up its mineral resources. The per capita income of the state was Rs. 28,806 in year 2007-08.

Culture:

The present day culture of Tripura is a composite culture of the Bengalis, the native culture of Kokborok speaking tribes of the Tripuri region, the Jamatia, the Reang and the Noatia tribal communities. Song and dance are the main features of the culture of this region. Music accompanied by sarinda and sumui a kind f flute is the very basic part of the culture. Some great Indian Musicians hail from this region like Sachin Dev Burman and his son Rahul Dev Burman.

In dance Bihu is world famous form of dance. Though it is accepted to be of Assamese origin but it is an integral part of the culture of Tripura and is performed o the day of Chaitra Sankranti (the last day of Chaitra month). Handicraft deserves a special mention in the Tripura culture and almost all native households are decorated by these items which are now a commercial product also.

Cuisine:

Tripura cuisine is influenced by the food available in the region. So rice is the staple food of the state and fresh vegetables accompany the rice. Primarily the native people were no vegetarian but now some trends of vegetarianism is coming up. The traditional cuisine of Tripura is called as Mui Borok.

Festivals:

The main festivals are Hindu festivals though some native festivals are still present in the region. Bihu the festival which was of native origin has now merged with the masses and has become the most prominent in the state. After the influx of the Bengalis the Bengali festivals are also now celebrated widely. Durga Puja is now very much popular festival in Tripura. The Tripura Sundari Puja at the night of Dewali is also very famous. Holi, Dussera, Bengali New Year, are other important festivities of the state. The Muslims celebrate all their festivals like the two Ids and Muharram, the Christians celebrate the Christmas day though now almost all people enjoy on this day.

Religion:

The Hinduism is the major religion in the state. It makes up to 85.6% of the total population. The next to be mentioned religion is the Islam or the Muslim religion which makes up to 8% of the total populace. Christians are also found in the state who adds up to 3.2% and the Buddhists comprise of 3.1% of the total count.

Welcome to Tripura, A State of India

The state is bordered by Bangladesh on the south, north and west. Indian states of Mizoram and Assam on the east. The main districts of the state are Dhalai, Ambassa, Agartala, Udaipur, Khowai, Kamalpur, Kumarghat, Bilonia, Sabroom, Kailashshahar and Teliamura. The main economic activity of the state is agriculture in the form of plantation of cash crop. Rice, oilseed, pulses, potato, sugarcane and tea are the main crops that are grown in the state. Hand woven cotton material, wood carvings or showpieces along with bamboo products are also processed in the state. Chaturdasha Temple, Jampui Hills and Neer Mahal are some of the best places to explore in the state.
