Uttaranchal Moteshwar Mahadev
Shree MoteshwarMahadev is a sacred shrine which is also known as Shree Bheem Shankar Mahadev, which was called Dakini State in ancient times. It is situated in about a kilometer distance from Kashipur bus stand, at a place known as Ujjanak. Navratra Festival is celebrated here every year which is attended by large number of people in the region.
This temple’s lingam is huge and such a size of Shivling is not seen in any other part of the country or world.
Kashipur is an old city, bearing reference to Mahabharata characters and it is one of the famous locations in Tarai region. It is situated at an elevated place of 218 mtrs from the sea level.
History
Moteshwar Mahadev temple is located at Kashipur which holds lot of religious and historical significance.Mythological stories go about informing us that Lord Shiva was in Kamroop here and during Mahabharata period this place was referred as Dakini. Hidimbadevi born out of Dakini forest region got married to Bheem of Pandava brothers and was known as a Devil race because she was born through Dakini.
The lingam of this temple already one of big size, it is believed that it is also growing over a period of time. This temple is said to have been built around 302 AD, its complex including a BharavNath temple and a ShivGangaKund in front of which runs river Kosi. There is a Maa Jagdamba Bhagwati Balsundari temple next to this temple. The history of this temple is explained by the spot Kila where Guru Dronacharyais said to have taught Kauravs and Pandavas in archery. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya asked Bheemsen to reconstruct this temple and so it is known as Bheem Shankar. Because of its size this Lingam is called Moteshwar.
Shree Moteshwar (Bheema Shankar) Mahadev is also considered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
In ancient times, this place was called Ujjain and the Dehla River here used to be called Swarnbadhra. Later during the regime of King Harsha, this place was referred as Givishan, alternatively Givisana, which fact has been recorded in the observations of the famous Chinese traveler Hueing Tsang who visited the country in the Seventh Century. It was during this period one Kashinath Adhikari founded this place and this place is named after him.
The places to visit here include Girital, Dronasagar, Chaiti Devi temple and few other spots which are associated with the stories around the Pandavas of Mahabharata epic. The Chaiti Devi temple and the Chaiti mela conducted once a year here are matters of big attraction among people of this region. The specialty of Moteshwar Mahadev is the Jyotirlingam appearance of the idol, which is very rare.
