Uttaranchal Chandi Devi Temple Haridwar
Construction of this temple was done in 1929 by King of Kashmir Suchat Singh. Neel Parvat is the exact location of this temple. The creator of this temple was Adi Shankaracharya and believed that idol of the Chandi Devi was established at this place in 8th century. This temple is also considered as Shaktipeeth and also that wishes of devotees are fulfill here. This temple is one of the three Shaktipeeth in Haridwar among Mansa Devi Temple and Maya Devi Temple. According to the nature of goddess, a Trident was established in 1814 at this temple. It is said that the Goddess Parvati assumed the incarnation of Chandi and came on earth. By her mesmerising beauty, the king Shumbha proposed her to marry. Chandi refused and king ordered his generals to kill her. But they were killed by Devi Chamunda, who took birth from the anger flame of Devi Chandika. Later the king himself tried to kill the goddess but killed by the Chamunda. Chandika Devi stayed at the hillock for some time. A temple was constructed at this place to commemorate the sacrifice and bravery of the goddess. Two nearby hillocks are still remembered as Shumbha and Nishumbha. This temple is oldest in Uttarakhand and thus has the special significance.
Architecture
The temple is well designed and well spread in vast area to accommodate the devotees during routine prayers and during any religious activity performed there. Boundary wall of this temple is an excellent example of barricading. Pillars with moldings on upper side have the hollow pipes at close distance to create the safety barricading around the temple. Inside the temple there is a provision of a large space having conical roof of corrugated galvanized iron sheet for performing daily prayers out of Garbhagriha so that internal portion of the temple is nit get spoiled. Tower of the temple has conical shape with the dome kept on the edge. Entrance has arches and a wooden gate with the toughest locking system. Inside the temple there are various sculptures found are self explanatory for displaying the history of the temple. Accessibility to this temple is also possible through rope way.
Significance
This temple is well known location during various festivals like Chandi Chaudas and Navratri. It is believed that all the gods and goddesses once visited this area and Maa Anjana also one of them. She was blessed by the Chandika Devi to have a child with divine powers and peace. Later Lord Hanuman proved that blessing of Devi. Also a Chandi Mandir is situated near Chandigarh (Punjab) and on the name of this temple; the area has been renamed as Chandi mandir.
How to Reach
This temple I accessible by three types of conveyances available.
By Air
Dehradun is the nearest airport. From the airport road conveyances are available to reach this temple.
By Rail
Haridwar is the nearest railway station and located from this temple at 3 kilometers distance.
By Road
Road is in better connectivity state and a distance of 3 kilometers from Bus stand Haridwar is required to reach this temple. Besides it, the ropeway is also available to reach the temple. Ropeway station is located near Mansa Mata temple and 740 meters of ropeway is spread to reach this temple. Ropeway is at the height of 208 meters from the general ground surface of the area. This rope way is also known as the Udankhatola of Devi Chandika.
