Odisha Bharti Matha Burial Temple
Bharti Matha Temple is a Hindu temple which is one of the oldest in Bhubaneswar and is dedicated to Lord Siva. The temple follows the Kalingan style of architecture and is responsible for upholding the heritage of the place. It was built in the 11th century and was used as a centre for Hindu pilgrimage. The temple is located in Badheibanka Chowk, in Old Town Bhubaneswar. The temple is surrounded by Ratha and Jamesvara Patna road in the east and south respectively with Bhrukutesvara temple in the west. It is a Hindu monastery which is three storeys high and faces towards the East.
Facts & Significance
Local legends claim that the monastery was established by Yajati Kesari who had also built the Lingaraja temple. Initially the Matha hosted the artists who contributed to the construction of the Lingaraja temple. Various rituals like Kartika Purnima,Durga Puja, Prathamastami etc. are performed here. It is indeed a hub of the local culture. Social events like the name giving ceremony, marriage ceremony, engagements and thread ceremonies are also followed here. The doorjamb of the Matha is an important decorative feature of the temple and is up to 1.7 metres high. The temple is so old that only the outer walls of the rooms in the western section exist.
