The temple belongs to the family of eight temples in Bhubaneswar that have been devoted to Lord Shiva. The name of the temple can be derived from two words “Ashta” and “Sambhu” that mean eight and Lord Shiva respectively. Out of these eight five temples stands in a row and hence are jointly known as PanchuPandava. This temple is maintained by RatnakarGargabatu and family and hence is run by the private owners. The architectural structure given to this temple resembles to that of 10th century AD that used characters like bada division and pabhagamouldings. The temple belongs to the Rekha Deul types and has been constructed using the concretes. To the east and south of the temple is the Godavari tank and Bindusagar tank respectively while the west shares a wall with the Uttaresvara Siva Temple and east contains the shrine.
Architecture
The temples main shrine is square in shape. The five chariots of the temple are marked with a raha in the middle while pairs of anuratha and kanikapagas are located on each side. Starting from the bottom of the temple to the top it has bada, gandi and mastaka. The base mouldings of pabhaga consist of khura, kumha, pata, basanta.
The parsvadevata fortes placed on raha paga having jangha in the north, west and south directions. The north and west sides are empty while the southern fortes has idol of Ganesha with four hands holding parasu, rosary in the lower arms while both the upper arms are broken.
