Maharashtra Siddheshwar Ratneshwar Temple
The Siddheshwar and Ratneshwar Temple complex is at about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from Latur City. The temple planned and built by the King Tamradwaj, as an act of devotion. It is an architectural wonder with intricate carvings of mythological characters and figures, in a narration of the episodes of mythological stories, which are important to the Hindu religion and the way of worship. The main temple is devoted to the Lord Siddarameswara Swamy Siddarama of Solapur one of the five prophets of Lingayat Veerashaivism sect of Hinduism and a famed spiritualist of the Kulla Kadigi community. He was also a poet writing poetry in the language of Kannada and a part Basavanna's Veerashaiva rebellion of 12th century.
History
The Temple and the Cause for Celebration
This temple marks the coming of age of a sect of Shaivism, devoted to Lord Shiva, the destroyer in the holy trinity of Hinduism. Until then though dominant in some parts of Maharashtra, Shaivism was more a philosophical thought in nature. This temple is the celebration of it becoming a mainstream sect in practice. This incident in the 12th century involved a lot of militant activity. Battles were fought both in the field and in the intellectual domain. This is the reason this form of Shaivism came to be known as Veerashaiva sect.
