Maharashtra Mallikarjun Temple
The prominent Malikarjun temple is basically known for its Gupta Lingam or invisible Shiva Linga. According to Hindu tradition, a sacred visit to this temple is necessary to complete pilgrimage of Mahalakshmi temple. Hence, devotees who want to visit at Mahalakshmi temple need to first visit Malikarjun temple. The presiding deity of the temple is called Malikarjun who is believed to be one of the incarnations of Lord Shiva.
History
There is no proper evidence available regarding the history and origin of this sacred Hindu worship place yet it is said the temple was constructed by a rich king called Udaykrishna, who was a great follower of Malikarjun. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Malikarjun was the self manifestation of Lord Shiva who wanted to visit the Mrityaloka or earth in human form. However, local legends say that centuries ago a sage called Kalmukhiya lived at this place. One night the sage saw a dream regarding a Shiva linga. Next day he told to villagers about his dream and invisible Shiva linga. Hence, villagers decided to build a Shiva temple at the location. However, the Shiva linga does still not exist in physical form thus considered as an invisible Shiva Linga or Gupta Linga.
Weather and time to visit
Kolhapur city has a tropical climate conditions. It means during the summer, the city becomes hot and humid while in winter it becomes cold and freeze. However, monsoon accord usually in the month of July. Hence, the best time to get there is from the month of March to October. However, followers of Lord Shiva can also visit during the Mahashivratri festival.

Kolhapur airport is the nearest airport and Kolhapur railway station is the nearest railway station. Hence, from airport or railway station, visitors or pilgrims can hire bus, taxis and cars to reach at Malikarjun temple.
