Kerala Vetticottu Sri Nagaraja Temple
District Alappuzha is known for its sacred Hindu worship places and renowned Vetticottu Sri Nagaraja temple is among one of them. This ancient temple is among the few Nagaraja temples in the country. The main deity of the temple is Lord Nagaraja or king of snake. Devotees from all over the state visit this sacred temple to have Darshan and blessings of Lord Nagaraja.
History
However, there is no scientific evidence available regarding the origin and history of this sacred Vetticottu Sri Nagaraja temple yet it is believed that temple was constructed centuries ago by an unknown dynasty. According to a legend, the temple was created by Lord Nagaraja who once visited the Mrityaloka or earth planet. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Nagaraja lives in Patal loka or underground world. Legend says that the place wherein current Vetticottu Sri Nagaraja temple is located used to be horrible forests. Once, a sage called Vasukumitra visited the place and started worshiping Lord Nagaraja at this place. He was granted various spiritual powers and finally blessed with ultimate salvation. Local inhabitants say that the temple was constructed by the followers of sage Vasukimitra who performed his penance at this place.
Architecture
As everyone knows, temples devoted to Lord Nagaraja are usually different from all other temples. Hence, this one is also different from all other sacred temples in the country. The important point regarding this sacred Nagaraja temple is that it is guarded by snakes. While visiting this temple, visitors or devotees can notice, the temple’s walls are adorned with snake’s paintings. According to Hindu mythology, Nagaraja or snake king is very important to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna. This is the main reason; people can also see here various idols of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and lord Krishna. On the stone pillars of the temple are decorated with snake’s sculptures that shows the all the Hindu Gods’ relation to Lord Nagaraja. Here, devotees can see lord Krishna sitting in on snake, lord Shiva wearing snake Vasuki and Lord Vishnu is resting on Nagaraja. The architecture of the temple shows the traditional Indian style of architecture which is only used in temples.

By Road
Mavelikkara Taluk is well linked with other parts of the state by developed roads. Hence, visitors or devotees can easily get road-based transport throughout the city.
By Rail
By using the services of Indian railway, visitors or pilgrims can easily reach at Vetticottu Sri Nagaraja temple. However, some of the nearby railway stations are Mavelikara railway station only 1 km, Cherivanad railway station 7 km and Kayankulam railway station 8 km distance from Nagaraja temple.
By Air
Visitors or pilgrims can get direct flight to Trivandrum international airport from various domestic or international airports in the country. Trivandrum international airport is located only 105 km distance from Taluk Mavelikkara.
