Kerala Srivallabha Temple
Sreevallabha Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Purusha. This temple remains to be one of the oldest and largest temples in the state of Kerala. Visitors from all around the world comes here. This temple is situated in the Thiruvalla town, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala. This religious monument is mostly known for its unique customs and architectural grandeur. The uniqueness found in the temple’s structure sets itself apart from any temple of the southern region. The most eye catching features are the stone-wooden carvings and other fine paintings. It is one among the 108 Divya Desams. Alvars and various other ancient workers are glorified by the work of Sreevallabha temple. The regional cultural dance Kathakali is daily played in the temple as an offering making it top the list of places where Kathakali is staged maximum annually. Sreevallabha Temple has governed one of the largest ancient educational institutions. The temple also largely made a contribution towards educational and cultural developments in Kerala.
Architecture
This ancient architectural site spreads across an area of 8.5 acres of land moving it to the topmost position among all the temples in old Travancore state in terms of area coverage.
The temple has boundaries of 12 feet tall, 566 feet long, and 4.5 feet broad of red compound granite walls.
History
Thiruvalla once used to be a village among other 64 Namboothiri villages of Kerala. Thiruvalla village is one of the oldest settlements of India. The place is located in the banks of Manimala River and was called vallavai. Later the name was transformed to Thiruvalla. The readings from the historical inscriptions say that the temple was built in 2998 BC for Sudarshana Chakra. Facts also say that this place was named after Thiruvalla and Sreevallabhapuram. The temple had an ayurvedic hospital with admission and treatment facilities.
Ways to Reach
This temple is located 750 meters south towards Ramapuram vegetable market and 500 metres south to Kavumbhagom. This temple junction at Thiruvalla-Ambalappuzha state highway (SH-12). The nearest railway station (Thiruvalla railway station) is just 2.5 km away from the monument. The KSRTC bus stand is also located close to the temple. Hence one can easily get in here. Both KSRTC and private buses travel frequently throughout the route. Taxis and Autos can also be used to reach the temple.
