Kerala Chettikulangara Devi Temple
Kerala state is famous for its ancient Hindu temples and renowned Chettikulangara Devi temple is among one of them. The sacred Hindu worship place is devoted to its main deity goddess Chettikulangara Devi. The sacred temple is considered among the most visited Hindu shrines in the country. The temple is also famous for its 365 days religious festivals.
History
However, there is no proper evidence regarding the origin or history of the temple yet it is said the temple was constructed by the local followers of the goddess. According to popular legend, centuries ago, there were some chieftains who went to participate in the sacred activities of nearby Koypallikarazhma Bhagavathi temple. It is said, all the local followers were insulted by the temple authority. Thus they have decided to build a holy temple of goddess Chettikulangara Devi. Hence, for achieving this goal, they all gather and started worshiping goddess. After the ten-day’s continuously religious worship, they witnessed goddess in their dreams who said she would soon come to their place. Moreover, according to a popular legend, when a local Christian man was going to Chettikulangara area, he found an old woman who asked him to help her to reach her place. Thus, Christian man helped him, however, meanwhile he slept. When he woke up, he found the old woman was vanished. He reached to village and informed local inhabitants about the mysterious old woman. The villagers took it as a sign of Devi or goddess and decided to build a temple.
Architecture
This Hindu sacred worship place is not only famous for its religious significance but also for its amazing architecture which cannot be seen elsewhere in the country. According to records, the temple was greatly renovated by local dynasties who ruled the state. The main attraction of this temple is its central hall, which is adored with mysterious sculptures. The temple houses many Hindu Gods and goddess such as Lord Sri Vishnu, Mahadeva, Devi Durga and Lord Ganapathy. It is said, there was a golden idol of Lord Shiva which was despaired. However, there is no proper evidence regarding such golden or gold-made idol of Lord Shiva.
How to Reach
By Road
Mavelikkara village can be accessible through roads. The KSRTC runs regular buses from various parts of the state to Mavelikkara village. Hence, road-based transport is the easiest transport to reach at the temple.
By Rail or Train
Some of the nearest railway stations are Mavelikara railway station only 1 km, Cherivanad railway station 7 km and Cheppad railway station also 7 km distance from Chettikulangara Devi temple.
By Air
Trivandrum international airport is the nearest airport, located only 105 km distance from the town. Hence, from the airport, visitors or devotees can hire taxi, bus and private cars to reach at Chettikulangara Devi temple.
