Karnataka Kukke Subramanya Temple
History
Kukke Subramanya temple is one of the most prestigious temples of Lord Subramanya located in Dakshin Kannada district of Karnataka state of India. In this temple, Lord Subramanya is the presiding deity and he is assumed as the chief of all serpents in universe. According to some religious books that Nagraja Vasuki himself asked shelter from Lord Subramanya while he was being faced horror from the Garuda during Samudra manthan. This temple is located between the geographical coordinates of 12.66 North and Longitude 75.61 East. Western Ghats are the surroundings of this beautiful temple. This temple is located on a famous mountain which is a favorite trekking destination too. Just close to the Kumara Parvatha another mountain is located named Shesha Parvatha which has the resemblance of a giant cobra who has opened his hood and guarding the shrine of Lord Subramanya. Surroundings of the temple are covered with dense forestry and lush greenery. Kumardhara River is in the way of this temple and it is believed to take a dip prior to enter in then temple is good. This temple was constructed during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana. Once Lord Subramanya came in the dream of a Brahmin courtier of the king and ordered him to quit the palace at once and search of suitable place for construction of the temple. Courtier immediately told this matter to king. Vishnuvardhana who was a true devotee of Lord Subramanya seriously noticed this dream and started a journey with the courtiers to search the suitable place. Hills of Western Ghats were found to be the best place and construction started. Later this temple was destroyed under natural calamities and kings of Vijayanagar Empire renovated this temple based on the ruins.
Architecture
This temple is designed in traditional Dravidian style. Entrance is supported by four major pillars as the portico of the entrance has a wide space and just over the Garbhagrihas a huge Gopuram is located. This Gopuram is like mother south Indian temples. On the both side of the Gopuram, a single storied complex is constructed. Style of these small buildings is mixed with the Portuguese style of construction. Sloppy roves, small dome type fitments with molded jali work, and plain construction of central hall makes this temple a mixed and unique construction. Approach road till the entrance gate of the temple is another added feature. Surroundings are beautiful and roves of the temple have a magnificent contrast with the surrounding nature. Central hall of the temple has vast plinth area to perform various Pooja activities and religious festivals. Pillars inside the temple have fine carving with stone discs on upper corner. This temple has also some of the carving styles of Hoysala dynasty temples constructed in South West portion of Andhra Pradesh and North east portion of Karnataka.
Festivals
In this temple Ashlesha Bali Pooja and a typical Pooja namely Sarp Samskara is celebrated. Ashlesha Pooja is a special Sarp Dosh Pooja which is celebrated here only. This Pooja is done every month and it is also said in the local public that on performing this Pooja on other days, no spiritual power is seen except in the Ashlesha Nakshatra. Sarp Samskara is the Pooja organised in this temple for the devotees to get rid of any snaky effects in their lives. It is believed that any curse by the Sarps is not affected if Pooja of a particular is done. In Sarp Dosh Pooja, effects of snakes on mankind are removed because it is believed that Sarps are the most effective living being on earth who can put deeper impacts on human’s lives.

By Rail
Subramania Road is the nearest railway station and located at 7 kilometers from the temple and ten minutes road journey will take a tourist to temple.
By Road
Local buses including taxies are plying on frequent basis. Easy and cheaper road conveyances are available to access Kukke Subramania temple at all time.
