Jammu & Kashmir Shankaracharya Temple
The Shankaracharaya Temple in Jammu & Kashmir is one of the most history filled temple in northern part of India as its roots date back centuries. The initial structure actually dates back to 200 BC while the present structure can be placed somewhere around 9 AD. This temple is located almost 1000 ft from surface level and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
History
This temple is believed to be originally constructed by known as “Sandiman”. According to Koul, this person reigned Kashmir from 2629 to 2564 BC. After going to through many reconstructions and repairs down the line, the latest structure in place was repaired by Sheikh Ghulam Mohiuddin, a Sikh governor.

By Air
The nearest airport lies just 25 kms away from Badgam District from where it is very easy to reach Shankarcharaya Temple through various means of transport.
By Rail
It is a wise choice to travel by train as it will take you through beautiful sceneries of Kashmir. The nearest railway station of Jammu lies just 300 kms away from the national highway NH1A. A taxi or a bus will take you to Shankaracharya temple from there.
By Road
It lies in the Srinagar district and the Highway NH1A connects the Kashmir valley with the rest of India through a frequent circulation of taxis and buses. There is also the option to trek from Durganang Temple as well.
Important Shrines
The important shrine of the temple consists of a circular cell which also provides a beautiful view of the valley. There is also the inner chamber of Shankaracharaya which is said to be covered with a modern ceiling. The temple of Shankaracharaya is located on top of a rock along with a conical hill beside the Dal Lake This hill is known as Shankaracharaya Hill and the temple is believed to be built by Askoka, the great emperor.
Significance of The Temple
The temple is known to be very significant in terms of both history and architecture. In terms of history, the great philosopher Shankaracharya had stayed here during his visit to Kashmir to revive Sanatan Dharma.

The best time to visit the temple would be between the month of September and October as winter would just be around the corner in Jammu & Kashmir. The temple is otherwise open all through the year and anyone can drop in any time.

In terms of architecture, the temple has awed modern archeologists in many ways. It has a high octagonal platform supporting which can be reached by climbing about hundred steps. The sidewalls to these steps contain Persian inscriptions which date back to the time of Emperor Shahjahan. The devotees must notice these impressive works of architecture along with their favorite Gods.

The Shankaracharaya temple is a nationally Protected monument and understandably the security at this temple is very high. Mobile phones and cameras are strictly prohibited from the temple and the temple authorities have the right to seize them.
